How, in 2026, does Steven Spielberg think grainy footage, bad CGI, and weepy melodramatic news broadcasters would make compelling evidence for alien visitation? Well, it doesn’t. And it doesn’t make for a good film either. Disclosure Day is an incoherent mess of ridiculous rehashed conspiracies that only your crazy uncle could love.

Disclosure Day’s monumental failure is its inability to conjure a single compelling character. For a story claiming empathy to be its center – because Colman Domingo tells us so – it provides absolutely no one to care about. Emily Blunt’s committed performance as Eve can’t save the murky puddle shallowness of everything on screen. Over and over, Spielberg shouts at us, ‘Your supposed to care!” without offering a reason: baddies back down because aliens look like their mom, or ex-wife, or that their kid really wants them to go to their school play or some other such nonsense. It’s enough to make you cry into your $20 popcorn…but not for the persons on screen. The humans act, behave, and respond in ways less convincing than the unconvincing aliens.

Then, there’s the plot. The good guys are building a house because aliens are animals who gave them a magic wand to reaffirm a nun’s belief in God and to stop the bad guys who, in the end, just shrug and walk away. Add in a multitude of debunked, decades old, claims, and you have this pretentious storytelling mess. Even the central premise, that the revelation of aliens among us will avert nuclear war, is not clearly resolved. We just get Courtney Grace tearing up to janky “declassified” footage that wouldn’t convince your eighty-year-old grandma.

When a night at the movies can cost you upwards of $100, Disclosure Day feels particularly insulting in its disconnect and pretension. At best, it could be described as a misguided vanity project, but it is so much worse. When better films, without the resources available to the Spielberg team, are out there, this deserves neither your time or money.
